2 hour mountain bike skills coaching | Auckland

Tailored coaching for real riders ready to level up.

Modern mountain biking is full of distractions — endless YouTube tips, generic advice, and gear that over-promises but under-delivers. It’s easy to feel like you’re making progress when really, you’re just spinning your wheels.

That’s where Hunter Mountain Bike Coaching changes the game.

I use proven coaching strategies, video analysis, and real-time feedback on the trail to create a program that’s built for you — your skill level, your riding style, and your goals.

With the right guidance, the right terrain, and a clear strategy, you’ll finally build the confidence, control, and technique to ride how you’ve always wanted to.

Meet at the trailhead, get stuck into real riding improvements with expert feedback & support.

Levels

Beginner

  • You’re new to mountain biking or you’ve mostly stuck to easy trails. You want to build confidence, learn the basics, and have more control on the bike.

  • These are some of the lessons that I offer for beginner riders:

    • Body position - Grade 3

    • Smooth gear changing

    • Braking - Grade 3

    • Line choice - Grade 3

    • Skill - Front wheel lift & rear wheel lift

    • Feeling nervous or tense on the bike

    • Braking too hard or too late on descents

    • Losing balance or putting a foot down in corners

    • Struggling with steep or uneven terrain

    • Not knowing the right body position for control

    • Hesitating on small features like roots or rocks

    • Lacking confidence to ride trails alone or with friends

    • Build confidence on the bike – feel stable, balanced, and in control.

    • Master safe braking – stop smoothly without skidding or losing balance.

    • Learn correct body position – ride with proper posture for control and safety.

    • Take on corners with confidence – flow through turns without fear.

    • Ride basic trails comfortably – enjoy green trails and start exploring easy blue trails.

    • Understand trail safety and bike setup – know how to ride safely and keep your bike ready for the trail.

Intermediate

  • These are all the lessons that I offer for beginner riders:

    • Body position - Grade 3

    • Smooth gear changing

    • Braking - Grade 3

    • Line choice - Grade 3

    • Skill - Front wheel lift & rear wheel lift

  • Beginner riders should be building fitness to be able to:

    • Ride up to 7km comfortably

    • Stay standing up on the bike down the full length of a trail

    • Climb for up to 2km with out stoping or walking

For tips to help build bike fitness please go to the link - Tips For Bike Fitness

  • Beginner riders often have not ridden many mountain bike trails if any at all. Having experience mountain biking at this level is not needed and I’m here to help you improve no matter what!

    However having ridden:

    • 1-10 trails of any grade

Will help as you will be able to focus more on the teaching.

  • For beginner riders the Okaroro Drive entrance is perfect. With only a small ride from the car we can get to trails like Gum Drops & Darkside both of which have small climbs and great for building core skill without over doing it.
