For beginner riders the Okaroro Drive entrance is perfect. With only a small ride from the car we can get to trails like Gum Drops & Darkside both of which have small climbs and great for building core skill without over doing it.

  • 1. Clothing

    Wear clothes that are comfortable, breathable, and suitable for physical activity. Weather in Auckland can change quickly, so it’s good to be prepared:

    • Moisture-wicking shirt (avoid cotton if possible)

    • Comfortable, flexible shorts or riding pants

    • Lightweight windbreaker or waterproof jacket (especially in cooler or unsettled weather)

    • Gloves for grip and protection

    • Sunglasses or clear riding glasses for eye protection

    • Layers if it’s cold — you can always take them off

    Tip: Dress for movement and comfort. Avoid baggy clothing that could get caught in the bike.

    2. Footwear

    The right footwear makes a big difference in comfort and control.

    • Flat-soled shoes with good grip (skate-style shoes or specific MTB flat pedal shoes)

    • Closed-toe shoes only – no sandals or jandals

    • Waterproof or quick-dry options are handy if trails are wet

    Note: Clip-in shoes (SPD-style) are fine if you're already confident using them, but not required.

    3. Bike

    Your bike should be:

    • In good working condition (gears, brakes, tyres all working well)

    • Mountain bike (hardtail or full suspension - road & DH bikes are not suitable for the Maraetai Forest.)

    • Tyres with good tread suitable for off-road trails

    • Flat pedals recommended for most riders, especially beginners

    4. Food & Water

    Stay fuelled and hydrated throughout the session:

    • At least 700ml of water (hydration pack or bottle)

    • Snacks like muesli bars, fruit, or trail mix

    • Lunch or extra food if you're booked for a longer session or full-day ride

    It’s better to have a little too much than not enough — energy and hydration matter when riding.

  • Where Do We Meet?

    I coach at Maraetai Forest, which has two main trail entrances: Rewa Road and Okaroro Drive. The meeting point depends on your skill level, fitness, and the focus of the session.

    Okaroro Drive Entrance (Best for Beginners to Intermediate)

    • Easier access to a wide range of trails

    • Great for newer riders or those looking to build confidence

    • Less climbing required, but still has fun, challenging options

    • Suitable for all skill levels and fitness levels

    📍 Meet at the end of Okaroro Drive, Maraetai (near the trailhead sign).

    Rewa Road Entrance (Best for Intermediate to Advanced)

    • Access to steeper climbs and more technical trails

    • Ideal for riders with good fitness and confidence

    • Great for progression sessions or specific skills training

    📍 Meet at the Rewa Road gate, Maraetai.

  • What If There Is Bad Weather?

    I keep a close eye on the weather leading up to your session and will always prioritise safety and trail conditions.

    Light Rain or Wind?

    • We usually go ahead — mountain biking can still be fun and safe in light rain.

    • I’ll advise on what to wear to stay comfortable and dry.

    Heavy Rain, Storms, or Unsafe Conditions?

    • If the weather makes it unsafe or the trails are too muddy or damaged, I’ll contact you as early as possible to:

      • Reschedule

      • Move to a better location

      • Or postpone until conditions improve
